College Mourns the Passing of John Hondros

Emeritus professor of history was 81

WOOSTER, Ohio – John L. Hondros, an emeritus professor of history at The College of Wooster, passed away Monday, June 18, at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster. He was 81.

A 32-year veteran of the college’s history department, Hondros came to Wooster in 1969 from Vanderbilt University as an assistant professor of history. He was promoted to associate professor in 1975, and professor in 1981. His areas of academic expertise included modern European history, World War II, and the Cold War. He was the author of Occupation and Resistance: The Greek Agony, 1941 – 1944.

In 1999, Hondros was named the Henry J. and Laura H. Copeland Professor of European History. He retired and was named a professor emeritus in 2001.
